"The Athlete"
Andrew Clark, the toughest of the bunch, is a character with a very strong and aggressive personality on the outside, but in the inside, he is someone who is struggling with identity issues. In the beginning of the film before going into detention, Andrew is having a conversation with his father about why he is being punished. The reason for which he is going into detention is not revealed but his father isn't upset at him for getting into trouble, instead he tells him that it is fine because he too as a teenager got into tons of trouble. All his father cares about is Andrew keeping his scholarship by being the best wrestler at his school. In this scene, it appears that he is a bad kid for getting into trouble but there is a look of frustration at the fact that his father wants him to do what he wants and not what is best for Andrew.
There is a scene where we see a change of character in Andrew. It is the part where John Bender is harassing Claire about her being a virgin. He keeps asking her if she has ever been touched by a guy inappropriately and Andrew could tell that it was bothering her so he stood up to Bender. He tells Bender to back off and settle the dispute like men. Bender takes the first hit, but Andrew manages to stop him and pin him down before he could do anything else. Bender then gives up and Andrew tells him that he better not speak nor think about Claire. In this instant, there is a tremendous change in character. The audience can see that he isn't just a mean and aggressive person, but a person who actually cares about how people are treated. It's as if he sees himself in Bender since he too got into trouble. There is a look on his face filled with guilt and sadness about something he's done but it is not revealed.
The real reason why Andrew is in detention is finally revealed when Claire, Bryan, Allison, and Bender are in a circle venting to each other about their problems. Each person reveals what their biggest struggle in life is and how it has impacted them in a bad way. Andrew shares that he got into trouble for bullying a kid my taping his buttocks together and ripping the tape off after. As he explains what he did to the poor kid, he begins to choke up and cry because he was beginning to feel very guilty for what he did. He tells the rest of the group that he felt so awful for what he did. He only did it to prove that he was cool and because he didn't want his father to believe that her was a weakling. Andrew has finally realized that what he did was so mean and horrible. His character changes completely into a more sincere person since he feels bad. His character in the beginning of the movie was the typical mean jock who's a bully, but towards the end he transforms into a better person who actually takes other peoples feelings into consideration.
